Shelbyville covers 36 businesses with COVID-19 relief

CARES funding supports 45 jobs

Oct. 19th, 2020 — SHELBYVILLE, Ind.— Forty-five jobs at 36 Shelbyville businesses affected by the COVID-19 economic downturn will be preserved through funding from the city of Shelbyville and the federal CARES Act.

The Shelbyville Common Council on Oct. 19th, 2020 approved a total of $331,986 in grants to the businesses. The city contributed $81,986 of the $331,986 and the state, $250,000 in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) funding.

As required by the CARES Act, all of the businesses plan to use the funding to ensure employees continue to be paid. Uses for the funding include paying rent, fixing Internet hotspots, and enabling outdoor seating in cool weather among other direct expenditures. Many of the recipients are downtown businesses such as restaurants.

Mayor Tom DeBaun praised the Common Council for its commitment to Shelbyville’s economy and community life, and said the additional funding from the city would help sustain many vital employers.

“Businesses contribute in so many ways to the vibrancy of Shelbyville,” said Mayor Tom DeBaun. “We are proud to help employers thrive through this challenging time.”

Shelbyville was notified in late August that it would receive $250,000 in CARES funding from the state. The Common Council voted on Oct. 19th, 2020 to add additional funding to this program to fully fund the remainder of the program and award all qualifying businesses with relief grants.

Nonprofits including Mainstreet Shelbyville, the Shelbyville Chamber of Commerce, the Blue River Community Foundation and Shelby County Development Corp. are contributing labor and resources to enable the businesses to remain open.
