Press Release | Shelby County Commissioners Issue County-Wide Burn Ban Due to Dry Conditions

Last Updated on September 16, 2024 by Jenna Martin

Shelbyville, IN | September 16, 2024 – During the Commissioner’s Meeting held this morning, the Shelby County Commissioners issued a ‘County-Wide Burn Ban’ effective immediately. The decision comes in response to the ongoing dry conditions and heightened risk of fires throughout the area.

The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice, with the Commissioners planning to reassess the situation next week. As Shelby County has not received significant rainfall, it is expected that the ban will likely stay in place for an extended period of time.

The burn ban restricts all outdoor burning, including campfires, brush fires, and the use of fireworks. Residents are urged to exercise caution and comply with the ban to prevent any potential fire hazards that could result in property damage or personal injury.

“Public safety is our top priority. The dry weather has created a serious risk of fires, and we are taking every precaution to protect the community,” said Scott Furgeson, City of Shelbyville’s Mayor. “We ask for everyone’s cooperation during this time and encourage all residents to stay updated on the situation.”

Local fire departments and emergency services are prepared to respond quickly to any fire-related incidents, and officials will continue to monitor conditions closely. The Shelby County Commissioners will provide an update on the burn ban at their next meeting or sooner if conditions improve. For more information and updates on the burn ban, residents can reach out to Denis Ratekin, Director of the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency at denis.ratekin@co.shelby.in.us.
