Press Release | City of Shelbyville Mourns the Loss of Mike Schantz, Esteemed Public Servant

Shelbyville, IN – August 6, 2024 – The City of Shelbyville is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mike Schantz, a revered figure in our community and a trailblazer in public service. Mike passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the age of 71 at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Mike Schantz dedicated his life to serving the public in various capacities. He was one of the first paramedics for the Shelbyville Fire Department, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in emergency services and public safety. Throughout his lifetime, Mike also served as a Shelby County Sheriff Deputy, a Fireman and Officer with Washington Township and the Indianapolis Fire Department, an EMA Director in Shelby County, and as the Fire Chief of Greensburg.

Known for his boundless energy and enthusiasm, Mike tirelessly worked to improve public service for the benefit of his community. His commitment to making a difference each day is a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.

The City of Shelbyville extends heartfelt condolences to Mike’s family during this difficult time. Mike will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Michael R. Schantz, 71, of Waldron, passed away, Sunday, August 4, 2024, at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

A Gathering of Friends will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the Schantz family home, 3484 S 725 E, Waldron. The Celebration of Mike’s life will follow at 10 am, officiated by Kim DeKoker.
