Shelbyville, IN – [July 18, 2024] – The City of Shelbyville is thrilled to announce that it has been selected as the host site for two highly anticipated 2024 fall sport sectionals: Boys Tennis and Cross Country.  This prestigious selection underscores Shelbyville’s commitment to fostering athletic excellence and community spirit.

Boys Tennis Sectional

Shelbyville will serve as the battleground for Boys Tennis Sectional 24, featuring five competitive teams: Morristown, Shelbyville, Southwestern (Shelby), Triton Central, and Waldron. This sectional promises to be an exciting opportunity for all five Shelby County programs to face off in a bid for bragging rights and advancement.

The defending champions, the Mohawks, will be challenged by local teams, with the victorious team moving on to compete at the Center Grove Regional site. The community is invited to come out and support their local athletes as they showcase their skills and determination on the court.

Cross Country Sectional and Regional

Shelbyville’s Blue River Memorial Park will be the scenic host for Cross Country Sectional 19, welcoming 16 teams to its trails: Center Grove, Decatur Central, Edinburgh, Franklin Community, Greenwood Christian Academy, Greenwood Community, Indian Creek, Mooresville, Perry Meridian, Roncalli, Shelbyville, Southport, Southwestern (Shelby), Triton Central, Waldron, and Whiteland Community.

Four local cross country programs will have the advantage of competing on their home course, providing them with a unique opportunity to excel in familiar surroundings. This sectional event is a significant step on the road to the state championship meet in Terre Haute.

In addition to hosting the sectional round, Shelbyville will also be the site for the regional competition. This change comes as part of the IHSAA’s recent restructuring of the state cross country series, which eliminated the semi-state round to enhance the competitiveness of the regionals. The new format will see five teams and 15 individuals from each sectional advancing to the regionals, creating an environment akin to the former semi-state meets

Community Impact

The selection of Shelbyville as the host site for these sectional events highlights the city’s dedication to supporting youth sports and fostering community engagement. Gary Nolley, Director of Operations of the Blue River Cross Country Course, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are honored to host these sectional and regional events and showcase Shelbyville’s vibrant sports community. This is a fantastic opportunity for our local athletes to compete on their home turf and for the community to come together and celebrate our sporting spirit.”

The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced the sectional host sites for fall sports, excluding football, at the end of June during an Executive Committee meeting. Shelbyville is proud to be among the selected locations, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for high school sports.
