Shelbyville, IN — The City of Shelbyville is pleased to announce the commencement of the North Riley Highway Road Enhancement Project on September 3, 2024. This significant infrastructure project, spanning from Rampart Street to Michigan Road, aims to improve road safety, enhance pedestrian access, and incorporate new community-focused features to benefit both residents and visitors. See feature in City of Shelbyville Q2 Construction Update Here (project at 34 seconds)

Starting September 3, traffic on North Riley Highway will be reduced to three lanes: one lane in each direction with a continuous center lane. This temporary traffic configuration is essential to allow construction crews to upgrade road shoulders, install new curbs, and create a pedestrian pathway along the corridor. The roadway is expected to return to four lanes by the end of the year, with additional enhancements, including the construction of two roundabouts, scheduled to continue into the following year.

In addition to these critical infrastructure upgrades, the project will introduce several streetscape beautification elements designed to enhance the visual appeal of the North Riley Highway area. Key features include landscaped center islands, decorative street lighting, and new roundabouts at Isabelle Farms and Michigan Road. The project also includes an extension to the city’s trail system, adding over a mile of new trail from Big Blue River Trailhead to Rampart Road, which will further connect the community to recreational opportunities.

The North Riley Highway Road Enhancement Project represents a comprehensive effort by the City of Shelbyville to improve connectivity, safety, and the visual environment of our community. This project underscores the city’s commitment to promoting active transportation and fostering a vibrant, engaged community. The project team is dedicated to completing these enhancements as efficiently as possible while minimizing disruptions to traffic flow.

“We are excited to bring these improvements to North Riley Highway,” stated Scott Furgeson, City of Shelbyville Mayor. “This project will not only enhance traffic flow and safety but also contribute to the overall beautification and connectivity of our city’s public spaces.”

Motorists are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and exercise caution when traveling through the construction zones. The City of Shelbyville will provide regular updates on the project’s progress as work advances.
