City of Shelbyville | Press Release | City of Shelbyville Launches “A Chance for Change” Post Release Clothing Closet Initiative

Last Updated on May 20, 2024 by Jenna Martin

Shelbyville, IN (May 2024) The City of Shelbyville is proud to announce the launch of its new initiative, “A Chance for Change” Post Release Clothing Closet. This community service project is designed to provide essential clothing and related items to individuals recently released from incarceration, helping them transition back into society with confidence and dignity.

The “A Chance for Change” Clothing Closet aims to assist these individuals by supplying them with basic everyday clothing, professional attire for job interviews, and seasonal garments. Items available include shirts, pants, jackets, shoes, suits, dresses, ties, coats, hats, gloves, scarves, undergarments, and socks. By ensuring that former inmates have access to appropriate attire, this initiative supports their reintegration and boosts their chances of success in various social and professional settings.

To make this project a success, the City of Shelbyville is calling on the community for support. Donations of new or gently used clothing are welcome and can be dropped off at the donation box located in the first-floor lobby of City Hall (44 W Washington Street, Shelbyville, IN 46176). The city will accept donations through June 7, 2024.

“This initiative is a crucial step in helping our community members who are reentering society after incarceration,” said Hillary Martinez, Community Project Navigator. “With your donations, we can provide the essential clothing needed to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate successfully.”

The “A Chance for Change” Clothing Closet is part of a broader effort to support formerly incarcerated individuals by reducing the barriers they face in rejoining society. In addition to clothing, the program may offer accessories, hygiene products, and guidance on dressing for interviews and workplace settings. This initiative is integrated with other reentry programs that offer job training, counseling, and additional support services.
