Call Shelbyville Water Resource Recovery Facility First @ (317) 392-5131
When a Shelbyville Public Utilities customer has sewer problems, the resident should first contact the Water Resource Recovery Facility. We will dispatch a crew to check the main sewer line. If the stoppage is in the City’s main sewer line, we will clear the stoppage. If the City’s main is operating normally, indications are that your private sewer service is the cause of the sewer backup and personnel will notify the owner and advise if a plumber should be called. If you call a plumber before you call the Shelbyville Water Resource Recovery Facility, the plumber’s fee will be your responsibility even if the blockage is in the main sewer.
Property’s Owners Responsibility
The owner of the property is responsible for maintaining the entire building service line from its origin in the structure to the sewer tap in the City’s main sewer line. The City has limited history of the location of the building service lines and cannot perform work on private property except within a public easement for a main sewer line.

What Can I Do To Prevent a Sewer Back Up?
Be careful what you put into the sewer. Several items that should not be put into your sewer system are paper towels, kitty litter, diapers, sanitary napkins, bandages, rags, plastic bags, and grease. Anything that will not totally dissolve can plug the sewer.
